This unit explores the art and cultures of the Alaskan Eskimo. Students examine traditional and innovative artworks. Instructional ideas include a variety of themes media and techniques which are explored through Perceiving and Studio activities.
Created to complement the Art First Nations in the North America program, this individual unit provides a rare glimpse into the lives and cultures of the Circumpolar World, one of the most remarkable frontiers on Earth. Each unit consists of instructional modules. Each module features a traditional and innovative artist, his or her culture, a theme, and two examples of artwork. Students learn to determine how the innovative artwork differs from the traditional artwork in terms of elements and principles of design. This compare and contrast approach provides a foundation for understanding and valuing art. The students acquire critical thinking skills and develop insights into the creative process. They become more knowledgeable about art and culture while being introduced to image development strategies that they can use in developing their own ideas in studio projects.
This unit includes:
- A set of 8 art prints 18″ x 22 3/4″ (45.8 cm x 56.5 cm);
- A Teacher’s Guide with lesson plans and information about the culture, the works of art, and the artists who created them;
- A plastic portfolio to facilitate storage.
